How Tree Spacing Changes Shade in a Plantation

Tree spacing changes the distance between shade footprints, but it never acts alone. Row orientation, modeled canopy dimensions, location, date, and hour all affect the pattern. A useful comparison changes one variable at a time.

  1. Within-row spacing separates neighbors; between-row spacing separates parallel rows.
  2. Closer spacing creates more opportunity for overlap, while wider spacing redistributes trees and gaps.
  3. Orientation changes the relationship between rows and shadow direction as the modeled sun position moves.
